SOPA app for android. Fight SOPA with the boycott SOPA app

As alot of you know today is "Blackout SOPA" day, where a lot of websites are letting the government and world what sites could look like if SOPA and PIPA pass.  I don't ever ask people to download an app but I am asking now.  Please download this app and let the companies that support SOPA know how we feel about this crap!  I think more people should be aware what SOPA is and what this could bring to ALL of us internet users.  My daughter was asking her Facebook friends what Sopa was and I  believe a lot of people don't know what it really is!  Anyhoo....  enough ranting and more about the app.

The app allows you to scan barcodes of items, which it will then tell you whether or not that product or company is in support or related to the bills in question. A simple, yet effective means of showing your distate for the legislation. The app is pulling data about companies and the bills from the developer's website and will be updated frequently.

Boycott SOPA

Download link from the Android Market

Description (from the developer)

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) if passed will drastically change the internet for the worse. This app will help you avoid SOPA supporting products to show your displeasure with the bill and help get it voted down! Read more about SOPA here. What it is: A free android application that you can use to scan bar codes to help identify if products are either created by or intimately related to SOPA supporting companies. There are currently over 800 brands/companies on our list. The list currently being used by the application is available on our website listed below.
This application will help you identify goods of companies which according to publically avaliable sources appear to have been supporting SOPA as of approx. January 5th 2011, but the list will be updated as we go.
It is intended as an aid to identifying such products but should not be relied upon. You should carry out your own check in case of any product this app indicates is a product of a company supporting
SOPA is not.
Please visit our site at www.nomoresopa.com for more information
Donating: We’ve had questions about donating, if you want to donate go here: http://nomoresopa.com/wp/?page_id=25 Donations will go to pizza and beer for long nights improving the application.
IMPORTANT: To all the folks asking why it requires other permissions- this app ONLY requires internet permissions. It does require the barcode scanner app made by the ZXing (google/open source) team to be installed on your phone, and nothing else - this app does the image processing to decode the barcode. If you'd like, you may use Google Goggles instead of ZXing and it will work fine. Our app makes one request over the internet to our server to find if the product is a SOPA supporter. We do not access any other data.
Update: We're working to incorporate the great feature requests that people have asked for. We're implementing a second version of the app right now, which will support multiple boycotts, a contact the company feature, and has a more sophisticated search functionality so accuracy will be improved. Thanks for all the interest and bear with us while we get a newer, fancier version out.

CyanogenMod creating a banned app market? Is this going to be Cydia for Android?

Koush has been talking on Google+ about a CyanogenMod market. Apps that are banned on the Official Google Android Market may be offered on the CyanogenMod Market. From the sounds of it there will be the one click root apps, wifi tethering apps etc. Sounds Similar to Cydia for IOS.

I think this is a great way to donate to the developers if you don't have PayPal. Having access to one click root apps and wifi tethering apps will be nice also.

ANDROID CYDIA?

More details to come after work tonight :)

CyanogenMod 9 released for the Motorola Xoom

Highly Functional CM9 Kang released for the Motorola Xoom

Here we have it folks!  This is something my daughter, Alyssa will be VERY excited about.  She got a Motorola Xoom for graduation last year and every time her and I are talking ROMS and her Xoom she always asks me if CyanogenMod is available for her Xoom.  She would have settled for CM7 (keep your Gingerbread flames to yourself :)....  she's a CyanogenMod fan, just like Dad).

The XDA Developers that never sleep have brilliantly pulled together a CM9 ROM (Kang), that is as smooth as silk.  There is only one function they don't have working yet, which is fine with me because of this mug my parents have dealt me.  That is the facial unlocking feature.  I was never a real fan of this feature since watching the official release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus live on YouTube.  So.....  if this feature never gets built in I'm fine with that, although I know a lot of people are looking forward to it.

Now lets get to where and how you can get this ROM on your shiny Motorola Xoom.

Head on over to Team Rogues thread and be sure to hit that little thanks  button and more importantly hit that dontate button and buy them a red Bull to keep them ROM's coming.

Includes:
+Source from CyanogenMod 9 (1/9/11)
+Full support for Camera, HDMI and Video acceleration (from the leaked 4.0.3 ROM)
+Rogue XM Kernel 2.0.1
+Disabled lockscreen rotation
+Allow apps to write to SD card (thanks kcrudup)
+Tweaked ICS boot animation (thanks Sardo Numspa)
Known issues:
-Face unlock does not work

Here's the XDA thread for CM9

Well, have at it ladies and gents!  I'm off to find my daughter's Xoom!

Galaxy Nexus one click root method. Actually Galaxy Nexus one click everything!

Galaxy Nexus one click root methd, unlocks bootloader and installs ClockworkMod.

Galaxy Nexus Toolkit Updated To 3.0, New One-Click Everything! The Galaxy Nexus one click Toolkit by forum moderator and recognized developer mskip has always been the must-have tool for owners of that device. It easily unlocks the bootloader, roots the phone, and installs ClockWorkMod to get you all ready and set up for your flashing needs, and provides many other useful options.
Better yet, it was just updated to version 3.0, which does all of the aforementioned steps with one click – so, even if you’re not familiar with all that stuff but are willing to take the risk of voiding your warranty, you can now go ahead and enjoy all the custom ROM goodness the Galaxy Nexus has to offer. Should you change your mind, it also allows you to relock the bootloader and reflash the stock recovery.
Sounds good enough? Visit the forum thread, which also provides detailed tutorials and lots of FAQs to help you get started.

Thanks to all the brilliant devs over at XDA!

MIUI on your phone with out flashing a thing (well kind off)

Theme your phone with MIUI with out rooting, flashing or any of that scary stuff with 2 simple apps.

We recieved an email from someone yesterday asking if there was any way to get MIUI on their phone with out rooting or flashing anything.  The answer is NO but.....  you can get it to look pretty darn close to MIUI with a launcher and a widget.  There are other apps you can pile on to make it look alot more like MIUI but these 2 are a good starting ground.
Here are some screen shots from my Samsung Galaxy S II Epic Touch 4G (mouthful there) using the MIUI.ADW.Launcher app and the MIUIDark Digital Weather widget from the Android Market.  No rooting or hacking nessesary and if you find you don't like the whole IOS feel you can uninstall them and go back to your stock look.  These apps work with pretty much any Android phone or tablet.

As you can see the home screen and app drawer have an iPhone look to them.  This is not everyone's cup of tea but the emailer is one of many that want to have the MIUI look and feel on their phone with out doing a little hackery.

Just a quick lesson on launchers on your phone and from the market.  If you have an HTC phone it comes with a "Sense" UI and launcher, Samsung generally has "Touch Wiz", Motorolla has "Moto Blur" and so on.  When you install a custom launcher from the market like this MIUI ADW Launcher it just pretty much covers the launcher that comes stock on your phone and gives it a whole new feel and look.  Motorolla users generally don't like Moto blur so they will put another launcher over it with Launcher Pro or like the launcher I'm writing about here.  It's all preference!  Also in a lot of cases a launcher can actually make your phone smoother.  The head writer over at our sister site Root Your Droid's main phone is a Motorolla Droid X2 and he feels that Launcher Pro makes his whole experience with that particular phone snappier and more customizable.  My main phone is the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and I personally can't stand Touch Wiz so I use a launcher by the name of ADW EX (I'll be doing a write up on both).

There's also a lot of different customizations you can do with this launcher, screen preferences, drawer settings, general behavior, UI settings and a whole bunch more.

The weather clock that is in the screen shot of my home page is a widget  from the market called MIUI Dark Digital Weather Clock (and it's free).  This widget IMo just gives it that final touch to give it a more of a MIUI ROM experience.

There you have it folks!  You can enjoy MIUI on your phone with out voiding your warranty by rooting or flashing anything.

One last thing before you go and grab this launcher.  When you first start the launcher it doesn't have an app drawer button (ala iPhone).  Just long press your home screen and press "Launcher Actions" then press "Open/Close App Drawer".  You can drag and drop it in your launcher bar and change it to any icon you want (long press the app drawer icon and edit it).

Thanks for the email!  I hope I answered your question :)

Verizon Galaxy Nexus root toolkit

The Galaxy Nexus one click root toolkit is here.  It doesn't get much easier then this folks!  This is great news for a lot of people that are new to the whole Android scene.  Rooting isn't for everyone and that's fine. But......  If it is for you then the folks over at Android Central have put together a sweet little Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus one click root method.

If you have your Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus in your hand and ready to start tinkering then head on over to the AC thread and one click away.

MIUI for the Kindle Fire

MIUI Makes Its Way to the Kindle Fire

This is huge folks!  I've run MIUI on most all of my android devices and I have to say that this is by far one of the most customizable ROM's that I've gotten the privledge to flash.  Everyone has their opinion on MIUI, it's trying to look like IOS, it feels to much like an iPhone, and every other comment or flame from someone that hasn't run it past the splash screen.  My daughter (Alyssa) isn't a fan for that very reason but (sorry Pumpkin) she hasn't given it a shot with a different launcher, theme, mods, lockscreen etc.
When Toast bailed on cm7 for the HTC Evo 3D I reluctantly gave MIUI a spin.  I couldn't have been happier with a dev bailing on a project (no dis Toast..... I know you're working on cm9....... *rolls eyes*).  enough with the Android gossip and lets take a look at what we have going on with the Kindle Fire and XDA.
BTW....  This device will get more dev support then any device for 2012!  The price is right and so is the software!  Meg, Is it in the mail box yet?
MIUI Makes Its Way to the Kindle Fire We all knew it would be happening soon, as the AOSP ROMs are essentials for most new phones and tablets and the Amazon Kindle Fire is the latest and greatest device that MIUI calls home and the development of the Amazon Kindle Fire remains on fire (bad pun ftw!).
XDA Senior Member leech2082 released the port which, for a first release, has a surprisingly low number of things not working in comparison to most ports that make first appearances on devices. According to him:
Everything seems to be working except MIUI Themeing and Video! Certainly you guys will find something I missed
So if MIUI theming and video are a couple of things you can live without and MIUI is something you’ve been waiting for, then now would be a great time to check it out. The installation instructions are easy and pretty standard for a ROM flash. Boot into recovery, wipe everything, flash and profit.
The boot up can take a few minutes, and as leech2082 will tell you:
what i have found is the boot animation may cycle twice before fully booting. Also after flash when you hit reboot sometimes it brings up the TWRP screen again. If that happens just hit reboot. Since there is not hard buttons on kindle we included Button Savior you will see if on the right side of screen by default
Not a big deal and easily fixable so nothing to be scared of and no reason not to take advantage of the always fun MIUI goodness. For more information, the shout outs, download links, screenshots and more thorough instructions, feel free to mosey on over to the original thread.

Myn’s Warm ROM Brought to Evo 3D

If any of you have ever owned an HTC Evo 3D or an HTC Evo 4G and are in to getting under the hood of those phones, then you know Myn's ROM.  He is one of the best Sense Developers if not THE best sense developer (IMO) on XDA.  I've enjoyed many of hours playing with his ROM's, tweaks and mods on my HTC Evo 4G.  Now he has a sandbox in the Evo 3D section?  Buckle your seatbelt folks!  This team is amazing and nothing short of perfection.  I did read in the XDA thread that he will be bouncing back and forth between his OG Evo and his Evo 3D....  So we'll be having Myn's love for both phones.  Great news for my household!  My wife has his work on her Evo 4G and my daughter has his work on her Evo 3D.

It’s rare when a ROM is so popular, the number of thread views are almost equal to the total number of members on XDA. As is the case with the original Warm ROM TwoPointTwo. One of the most popular of all time for those toting the HTC Evo 4g.
Now those who have migrated to the HTC Evo 3D, you can once again get a taste what is arguably XDA Recognized Developer (and all around good guy) Myn’s greatest work thanks to the work of fellow XDA Recognized Developer JoelZ9614 and the rest of Team Warm.
The sexy, lightly themed and totally awesome ROM has received a bunch of upgrades from it’s last public release on an Evo device beginning with going from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3 and including:
Added GPU UI Acceleration (instead of CPU)
Added Additional Reboot options (Recovery, Bootloader, Hot Restart, Reboot) (NOTE: Hot Restart currently not working properly)
Added DSP Manager (Thanks cyanogen)
Added CRT TV shutdown animation
Added HW Acceleration Tweak To Adreno_config
Added SMS Backup/Restore
Added Tweak to increase sdcard read ahead buffer (Thanks Misfit)
Added 3D Home Screen (Toggable in Settings | Warm Tweaks)
Added Native Screenshot Functionality (Press Home + Power at the same time)
Added Zeus Mods [kinda] Quick Settings
Changed WiFi Scan Interval To 180 seconds to further conserve battery
Added Tweak to persist home app in memory
Added various battery tweaks
So for those who want the good old feel and look of the original Warm ROM, you can head on over to the original thread for download links, installation instructions, a full change log and all the Warm goodness those from the HTC Evo 4g remember.
Thanks XDA!

Google Pulls 'Official' Siri App from Android Market

Google Pulls 'Official' Siri App from Android Market

Google has reportedly yanked an app masquerading as Siri, Apple's voice command personal assistant software, from the Android marketplace.
The move comes amid a deluge of Siri wannabes that have invaded the Android World since Apple introduced the Iphone 4S and its innovative features.
An app called Siri for Android, made by an outfit called Official Software, appeared in the Android market on Friday and was pulled from the bazaar by Google just hours after its arrival there.
Also, all other apps by Official Software disappeared from the market, as it appears that Google has pulled the software maker's account, which allows it to sell programs at the outlet.
The software company did a number of dubious things that appear to have prompted Google to act against the firm.
For example, it used Apple's Siri icon for the Official Software Android app. The word "official" was used in a way to make the app look like it was a true clone of the Apple app. When the Siri icon was tapped, all Official Software's app did was load Google's own voice command software, Voice Actions.
This isn't the first time something like this has happened.
A search for "Siri" on the Android Market by Android Fan Network revealed 131 hits, but less than a handful of the programs had more than 10,000 downloads. They were Vlingo Virtual Assistant (32,328 downloads), Iris (20,309), Skyvi (19,444) and Speaktoit Assistant (11,600).
While the Android world has been laboring hard to emulate Siri's functionality since Apple pulled the wraps off it, it hasn't quite made it there yet.
I've concluded that you can find decent virtual help on an Android phone, but the assistants available likely won't be as smooth and capable as Siri.
